Back in 1994, I ran a course focusing on creative visualisation, as part of my work with performing arts students.

The technique I used was simple: I would invite them each to find a comfortable place to sit or lie down, then I would suggest they close their eyes and follow the words I'm saying, and enjoy the adventure, as I guided them through a variety of experiences.

During feedback sessions, the students would then describe their experiences to the rest of the group.

Often, several students would report quite astonishing experiences they'd had, where their conscious minds had begun to drift from one idea to another, sometimes seemingly unrelated to the things I'd been saying, giving them amazing new insights.

Sometimes, they would report that, while they had continued to hear the sound of my voice, they hadn't been aware of the actual words I'd been saying, because they had become so engrossed in the pictures they were seeing in their minds.

Other times, they would report feeling a profound level of relaxation, such that they'd never previously experienced – and they wanted to know how they could reproduce this for themselves!

It was especially exciting for us to explore consciousness in this way, because it all took place in a very safe environment, which I think is very important.

It's funny, because I bumped into some of my old students a few years ago and we got chatting. After finding out what each of them were now doing, they asked me if I still did any teaching work, so I told them that I now teach NLP and Hypnosis.
